Ruta 5 is Chile's longest route and part of the Panamerican highway system. It runs from the Peruvian border connecting with Peru Highway 1 19 kilometres north of Arica to Puerto Montt where it connects by ferry to the island of ChiloƩ. It bypasses Santiago, the country's capital. The speed limit varies between 100 kph and 120 kph. It is mostly a 2-lane paved road, but sections south of La Serena have been upgrade to a 4-lane freeway with higher speed limits. The highway ends in Puerto Montt.
