Punta Arenas (literally in Spanish: "Sandy Point") is the most prominent settlement on the Strait of Magellan and the capital of the Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region of Chile.

The Magallanes region, part of Chilean Patagonia, is named after Magellan, the Spanish explorer who, while circumnavigating the earth, passed close to the present site of Punta Arenas in 1520.

It is the southernmost city of its size in the world. (Ushuaia, Argentina, also makes this claim and is further south, but has only half the population of Punta Arenas).

After completing our W-Trek in Torres del Paine and returning to Puerto Natales, we took a morning bus (Bus Pacheco) from Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas. Punta Arenas has a commercial airport with direct flights to Santiago. We had booked our return to Santiago for the next day. We would spend the afternoon at Seno Otway to view Magellanic Penguins.

Punta Arenas was a new frontier for us, being the southernmost point that we had been on earth. Coordinates are 53 degrees South, 71 degrees West
