Lassen Peak is the southernmost volcanic peak in the Cascade Range that extends as far north as southern British Columbia. It was part of two national monuments created by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1907. But it was the series of eruptions from 1914 (that lasted till 1921) that resulted in the area being declared a national park in 1916.

Lava Beds

Lava Beds lies on the northern flank of the massive Medicine Lake volcano. Over the last million years, this shield volcano has spewed forth lava, gases and cinders, creating a seemingly inhospitable landscape. The Lava Beds National Monument offers visitors access to lava tubes, surface lava flows, cinder cones and spatter cones.

Redwood NP

The northwestern coast of California contains a series of protected redwoods parks that are cooperatively managed by the National Park Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Together these parks are a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. The individual units start from the Redwood National Park (near Orick) and proceeding north along the coast, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. The National Park boundary also stretches into a small sliver of Pacific Ocean all along the coast from Orick to Crescent beach with the intention of protecting the marine life there.
