Sayac Marca |
Literally, "Inaccessible Town", perched on top of a steep and narrow cliff. We leave our day packs on an alcove under the watchful eye of Peter, our porter and climb up the steep and narrow steps leading to the impressive Inca site. Sayac Marca was also discovered by Hiram Bingham, but the name was coined by the Fejos expedition due to its position of being protected on 3 sides by a precipice that descends to the dense jungle of the valley of the river Aobamba below. There is no conclusive theory about the reason for Sayac Marca's existence with Bingham, Fejos and others coming up with their own explanations. The ruins are dated to the last half of the 15th century The above picture captures the site in its entirety including the steep steps leading to it. It took us an hour to descend from the Second Pass to Sayac Marca. We spend a half-hour at the site listening to the guide. |
