Saturday, 4:40pm: Driving to Whitney Portal and looking back we see the Whitney Portal Road from Lone Pine passing through the Alabama Hills. The valley beyond is Owens Valley, which leads south into Death Valley National Park.

The distance from the town of Lone Pine to Whitney Portal is only 13 miles, but it climbs more than 4000 feet. We decided to stay the night before the hike at higher altitude to acclimatize ourselves better. We also hiked 4 miles at 10,000 feet in the nearby White Mountains (Ancient Bristlecone pine forest) during the previous day.
